White Threads Floss Tube #55 – Welcome back for a little update

After a two month break, I’m finally back with a little update on where things are at with me, where things are at with my book, and about some embroidery products that we love.

Dovo scissor sadness

Dovo Hardanger ScissorsI was in contact with Dovo in Germany yesterday to place an order, and learned some sad news. Earlier this year, Dovo was having some difficulty and they were restructured.

I learned yesterday that the shaving equipment part of the business was sold, but the scissors part was not. They have ceased production of their scissors, and unfortunately they have no more stock of the beautiful Dovo Hardanger scissors that we all love. I can’t get anymore, and I have sold all the ones I had. I was happy to learn that Anne, who I have always dealt with at Dovo and who was always so helpful, has her employment assured by the new owners.

It is such sad news about the scissors.

I do still stock some lovely stork scissors, which are great, but the Dovos were that much nicer (with a price to match!). You can find the stork scissors here: http://www.vettycreations.com.au/3_5in-stork-embroidery-scissors.html

I’ll now have to search for new scissors of the amazing quality of the Dovos. If you have other, non-Dovo scissors that you love for Hardanger and other forms of cutwork, please let me know about them, so that I can look into them. Thanks!

Book flip-throughs

Some time ago I made a White Threads FlossTube video which was flip- or flick-throughs of all my books so that people could see what was in them, with the commentary pointing out notable features of the books. It’s been a popular video and hopefully people have found it to be helpful in assessing whether a particular book is right for them.

book flick through

I have now broken that full video up into separate single book videos. This is so that shop owners can use the videos on their website or socials to promote that they’re selling the book. If you’re a shop owner, I would love you to feature these videos, and thereby increase your sales of them. They feature minimal Vetty Creations branding, so you don’t have to worry about me dragging your customers away from you and towards me. That isn’t my aim at all!

You can find all of these videos in my Book Announcements and Trailers playlist. And in case you want the easy option, the list is also below.
Early-Style Hardanger by Yvette Stanton
Elegant Hardanger Embroidery by Yvette Stanton

Hopefully these videos will be of great assistance to people. If you have any questions about any of my books, please don’t hesitate to ask.

White Threads FlossTube #52 – 1000 Artisan Textiles book review

Firstly, thank you for your messages of support and encouragement after my last video. I really appreciate them.

I went home over the weekend and was able to collect a whole heap of business supplies, so can continue running the business where I am. I hope I’ve brought enough with me of everything! So if you were holding off ordering, you’re now welcome to, and I should be able to fill it. Thanks.

Today I give you a little look at a gorgeous book I own, called “1000 Artisan Textiles”, by Sandra Salamony and Gina M Brown. It’s a book full of textile inspiration, and always worth a browse. This is not a how to book, but instead is cover to cover with images of textile works including wearable art and couture, fashion accessories, soft furnishings and vessels, tapestries and display art, and art quilts. So much to drool over!

White Threads FlossTube #50 – A needlework gift

In this episode of White Threads FlossTube, I show you a special embroidered gift, and the story behind how it came to be given to me. It’s a piece of Chinese embroidery, and I explain one of the reasons why I love looking at embroidery from other cultures.

White Threads FlossTube #49 – Lighting for needlework in times past

Something that I’ve wondered about for a long time is how did embroiderers in times past, see to do their embroidery? Lighting was poor inside, with no electric lighting, and often only candles or firelight. For many they would have been working around and outside the home in the daytime, so couldn’t make use of sunlight to embroider by. So when and how did they do their embroidery? And consider that they often used to work on fabric counts of 60-100 threads per inch which is much, much higher than we are used to these days.

Today I explore this in my White Threads FlossTube video, with a possible solution from Kari-Anne Pedersen, Curator of Costumes and Textiles, Norsk Folkemuseum, Olso, Norway. I make pictorial visits to open air museums such as Hancock Shaker Village in Massachusetts, Skansen in Stockholm and Norsk Folkemuseum along the way.

Evaluating my FlossTube videos

Near the end of March I recognised that our world was changing quite significantly. A lot of people were isolating, whether voluntarily or because they had to. People were scared. People were lonely. People were looking for things to do while they were stuck at home.

And so I realised that it would be an excellent time to start a FlossTube channel. White Threads FlossTube was born! I saw it as a way of giving people something to look forward to in the uncertain times, with a bit of informal needlework education, chatting about needlework and showing you interesting needlework.

I had no idea that I would gain benefit from it as well, such as through the interesting conversations I’ve had with viewers as a result of it. So thank you to you, my viewers for being part of this with me!

Even though I’ve been working flat out to finish my book, it has been a welcome interruption for me, at times, to make the videos. They are enjoyable to make, which isn’t actually what I expected! And it’s given some variety to my week.

I’ve now done 48 videos, and I felt it was time to ask for some feedback. What’s been your favourite of my White Threads FlossTube videos so far? Why did you like that one?

I have a fair amount of variety in my video topics because I’m interested in a lot of things – is there one or more topic that you enjoy more than others?

Have you shared any of my videos on your social media? Why or why not?

Is there anything else you’d like to say to me about the videos?

Thanks so much for joining me in this new venture!
