Scurrilous claims in an old email

Me studying smøyg in a museum in Norway

A libellous email was sent to me many years ago by a person unknown to me, making scurrilous claims about a needleworker of note (not me).

Amongst their many complaints were: – * is not formally trained at the Royal School of Needlework (RSN) and […]

Sardinian knotted embroidery candle wrap

This style of embroidery is called Punt’e Nù, and is from Sardinia, off the coast of Italy. It is a really unusual style of embroidery, in that it is made from hundreds (thousands?) of tiny knots worked on the surface of the embroidery. That makes it really textural and really quite unique.

Shown is […]

When is it not Hardanger any more?

These photos are the work of my friend Cathinka, who is known online as Hardangerrebel. (You can find her on Instagram and Facebook under that name.) She’s been experimenting a lot with Hardanger – particularly lately – pushing the boundaries. Her moniker is quite apt! I have her permission to post these photos and […]

Learn from where you can

Me (third from left) meeting with and learning from some Norwegian stitchers at Husfliden in Skien, Norway, 2016.

NZ teaching trip report

I posted regularly about my NZ teaching tour while I was there, on social media. I wasn’t able to also post here, as it is a little harder to do. So today I’d like to share with you some of the images from my trip.

I had a wonderful time, and really enjoyed sharing my […]

First finishes from NZ trip

Whenever I teach a class, I always tell the students that I love to see photos of finished work, even if it is 10 years down the track! The first two photos have come through, following my recent New Zealand trip.

Lesley Anderson completed her Frisian Whitework Tree of Life within days of […]

Auckland class availability

I’ll be in New Zealand next month on a teaching tour. Despite the fact that it has been organised extremely quickly, to cleverly capitalise on a cancellation of other classes elsewhere, most of the classes have already filled.

Detail from the sampler

However, there is one small opportunity for you if you’d like […]

Hardanger mythbusting – yet again

You may know that Hardanger mythbusting is one of my favourite subjects. There are many myths about Hardanger, and I like to promote accurate information, thereby busting as many of those myths as I can.

Some Hardanger myths include the following: Hardanger must be done on 22 count fabric, because that fabric is called “Hardanger […]
