Hardanger Filling Stitches – square filet

Square filet

This Hardanger filling stitch is a square filet. It’s very much like a dove’s eye, but turned 45º. For a very long time I avoided square filets. Now that I’ve done a lot of them I really can’t figure out why! They sit nicely, and they look great. I’m not sure why I was avoiding them!

Square filets can be used simply, as shown, or there are some variations. I’ll show some of these later in this series.

As with dove’s eyes, care must be taken to have the stitches sitting correctly. One end of each of the four stitches that form a square filet must be on top. If there are two ends of the one stitch either on top or below, then it is not formed correctly. My step-by-step instructions for both left- and right-handed stitchers, will show you the correct technique for forming this stitch.

We’re part way through a series exploring the stitches that are featured in my forthcoming book, Hardanger Filling Stitches. If this is the first post you’ve seen in the series, have a look for the others.

Hardanger Filling Stitches by Yvette Stanton, will be arriving in Australia in December 2023, New Zealand shortly after that, UK in February 2024, and the US in March. You can order it from your favourite needlework store, worldwide. If they don’t know where to get it from, you can ask them to contact me, and I will direct them accordingly.

Hardanger Filling Stitches – three spoke spider web

three spoke spider web

This is a spider web with three spokes, which is one of the spider web variations in Hardanger Filling Stitches. It looks great in a border, as shown here, or can also work really well in a large square with one in each of four quadrants. In each quadrant, the diagonal stitch could be pointing in to the centre of the large square, or pointing away from the centre. Each version would give quite a different look.

Hardanger Filling Stitches – dove’s eye

dove's eye

Dove’s eye stitch is an oldie but a goodie. It is a traditional Hardanger stitch that has remained popular because it is such a useful and attractive filling stitch.

However, many people don’t realise they’re not working them correctly, and I’ve even seen books that instruct using an incorrect method. (By this I don’t mean there is an accidental error in the instructions – that can happen to the best of us! – but that the method that is taught is not correct.)

Of the four stitches that create the dove’s eye, one end of each should be on top of the next. There should never be two ends of the same stitch on top, or at the bottom; that is incorrect. Also, the intersection of the first and last stitch should have the same number of twists as the rest of the stitches. Sometimes I see the intersection of the first and last stitches with too many twists or too few.

Hardanger Filling Stitches has instructions for working dove’s eyes in a clockwise direction and in an anticlockwise (or counterclockwise) direction. And as with all the stitches, there are both left-handed and right-handed instructions.

Dove’s eyes can be combined with many other stitches to create conglomerate stitches. That’s one of the things that is so appealing about them – they’re very versatile. Many of these variations are included in Hardanger Filling Stitches.

We’re part way through a series exploring the stitches that are featured in my forthcoming book, Hardanger Filling Stitches. If this is the first post you’ve seen in the series, have a look for the others.

Hardanger Filling Stitches – wrapped bars

Wrapped bars

Today’s stitch from Hardanger Filling Stitches is Wrapped bars. For much of my Hardanger career, I have avoided wrapped bars. This is because so often they look wonky and dreadful. I dislike the way they can distort the fabric and don’t sit “just so”. Other people might be ok with that, but it doesn’t make me happy.

However, they really needed to go in my book, so I had to figure out how to get great results, so that I would be happy using them and happy teaching them to others. With experimentation and repeated practice, I can now get my wrapped bars sitting pleasingly, and my instructions will also show you how.

They’ll never be my favourite stitch, but sometimes they’re really useful, and now I feel much happier about using them!

Do you like wrapped bars? Or does their often wonkiness bother you too?

Hardanger Filling Stitches – diamond filling

Diamond filling

Diamond filling was a new (to me) stitch that I learned while writing my forthcoming book, Hardanger Filling Stitches. It is not a well-known stitch, but I think it is really lovely.

It isn’t difficult to stitch, though there are quite a few steps to follow. I find that this is a stitch where you need to follow the instructions quite a few times in order to get it to sink in. (If you need to follow the instructions *always*, don’t worry either. There is no reason why you need to keep it all in your head! I refer to my books all the time, and I wrote them!)

Is this a stitch you’re familiar with?

Hardanger Filling Stitches – lacy buttonhole edge

The next stitch I’m featuring from my forthcoming book, “Hardanger Filling Stitches”, is the lacy buttonhole edge. This is an edge that many people want to learn how to do as it is so very pretty!

The edge is delicate and actually not very strong on its own, so my instructions teach you how to reinforce it with lacing threads on the back, and how to stitch the buttonholed corners so that they are strengthened too.

The photograph shows dove’s eye fillings worked within the edge, so as you can see, it doesn’t have to just be plain needleweaving.

Hardanger Filling Stitches: Whipped spider web

Today I’m starting a new series showing you some of the stitches that are included in my forthcoming book, Hardanger Filling Stitches.

Whipped spider web

The first one is Whipped spider web. There are a number of different spider web stitches in the book, and this is one of my favourites. I love the smooth look it has across the surface of the web, and the fact that it is quite dynamic.

Auckland class availability

I’ll be in New Zealand next month on a teaching tour. Despite the fact that it has been organised extremely quickly, to cleverly capitalise on a cancellation of other classes elsewhere, most of the classes have already filled.

A house-keeping note

When I close the Vetty Creations office, I always put a note on my website (on all pages) explaining that the office is closed and when it will reopen. I note that I will respond to all enquiries and orders on my return. A brief but just as informative version is in the alt text, in case you cannot see/read images.

If it’s the weekend (I’m on the east coast of Australia, so my weekend may not quite align with yours due to time differences), I’m probably not going to respond either. If I do, consider it a bonus, rather than the norm.

I am one person. My business is just me. I need a break at times.

Thank you to all of you who respect my right to have a break. I appreciate this patience and generosity. I work incredibly hard, and I need a rest at times.

I am back in the office today following my time away, and I am working through the orders and enquiries in the sequence in which they arrived.
