White Threads

cushion edges

Now that the craft show is over, I am getting stuck back into writing the Portuguese whitework book, and its certainly not a chore!

I have done the stitching for possibly about half the projects, but still need to work on some more. I think I’d like to work on a cushion next, but the […]

designing covers

I am going to be an *awful* tease today. On Friday afternoon I designed a highly possible cover for my new Portuguese whitework book. I need the cover for publicity purposes for the Sydney Craft and Quilt Show in a few weeks time. But its too early to show you here, as I don’t even […]

weekend whitework

I had the most marvellous weekend. On Saturday we had good friends from Ethiopia (though they are Australian actually) over for lunch and served them a yummy Vietnamese dish, which we figured they’d appreciate because Asian style food can be hard to concoct in Ethiopia. I don’t know that fish sauce makes it to Addis […]

no turmeric dyeing

You’ll be pleased to know that I didn’t get any turmeric or berbere (bright red spice mix with paprika and chilli type colouring) on my tablecloth yesterday. In fact I didn’t get any embroidery on it either!

I did some planning for the surface embroidery – worked out the beginnings of a chart for it […]

drawn thread work done!

I did it! Last night I finished the drawn thread work for the tablecloth for my Portuguese whitework book. What a feeling of accomplishment! One only slightly dampened by the fact that I now have about a million and one bullion knots ahead of me…

The drawn thread work base just by itself looks gorgeous […]

special linen

I had a lovely trip to The Crewel Gobelin yesterday. I took my Portuguese embroidery to show them (they oohed and aahed appropriately!), and my current embroidery to find the perfect thread for it. I found a lovely Gloriana silk which will work beautifully.

We were talking about the Portuguese embroidery and the linen that […]

Mountmellick solace

This is the Mountmellick doily I’ve been working on over the last few days. It was a lovely project to work and really helped my emotional wellbeing. If you didn’t read the comments from yesterday’s post, please do take a look at Lakaribane’s blog post, about her experience of healing from sewing following the devastating […]

Writing to a timescale

I’ve been in contact with a buyer for one the distributors I use and they’re very keen on the idea of my new Portuguese whitework book. This is great news!

However, in order to get the book done by a certain time, it means I’m going to be working my backside off in the next […]

Portuguese whitework in Brisbane

Back from an excellent weekend in Brisbane last night. I’d been at AllThreads Embroidery teaching Portuguese whitework on Saturday and yesterday. We had so much fun!

We started off the class with me showing the photos I took of the embroidery and the town in comes from in Portugal, from my visit there in 2009. […]

hardanger: flavour of the month (or week!)

In the past week I have had not one, but three very nice reviews of my book Elegant Hardanger Embroidery sent to me. It has been lovely reading people’s comments about why they love the book so much.

I wrote it 10 years ago now, which seems pretty mindboggling, actually. (I’ve been writing books for […]
