White Threads

weekend whitework

I had the most marvellous weekend. On Saturday we had good friends from Ethiopia (though they are Australian actually) over for lunch and served them a yummy Vietnamese dish, which we figured they’d appreciate because Asian style food can be hard to concoct in Ethiopia. I don’t know that fish sauce makes it to Addis […]

no turmeric dyeing

You’ll be pleased to know that I didn’t get any turmeric or berbere (bright red spice mix with paprika and chilli type colouring) on my tablecloth yesterday. In fact I didn’t get any embroidery on it either!

I did some planning for the surface embroidery – worked out the beginnings of a chart for it […]

Green beading

I received the latest copy of Embellish magazine yesterday. This issue I have a green beaded shrug in it. The beading is a band along the edge of the sleeves. Its quite simple, but really adds that little something special to the garment. You could also bead similarly down the front of a cardigan or […]

Magazine project

As you may know, I have been regularly contributing to Embellish Magazine, which is a young magazine primarily about the embellishment of fabric and clothing. I have been asked to provide an embroidery project for each issue. Sometimes they send me the clothes to work on, and sometimes I provide something.

The issue I am […]

finished the forest

I was due to go out with friends on Saturday night, and so knitted furiously that afternoon. About an hour before I was due to go out, I finally finished knitting my forest jumper (sweater), which meant that I could wear it out to dinner. I changed the pattern (Baby Cables and Big Ones Too) […]

knitting up a forest

I realised yesterday afternoon that I never told you which of the two wools I decided to go for. I chose the Forest coloured Melody wool – the smooth one. I decided not to just get both, as my life really is quite busy, and while I might be able to devote enough time to […]

knitting project in the wings

I wrote a little while back about the fact that I currently have a need to knit. Its getting colder here, and yesterday I wore my first woollen jumper (sweater) of the season. I have a jumper that will need to retire this year, as the elbow is wearing through. Its of just a strange […]

needing to knit

With the weather getting colder here, I’m feeling a need to knit! Over the past few years I have knit about one item of clothing each winter season, sometimes for me, sometimes for one of my daughters.

For quite some time now, I’ve had a ball of Sirdar Snuggly Baby Bamboo sitting on my desk, […]

shingo sato in Australia?

I had an email conversation with Shingo Sato last week. If you have no idea who I am talking about, head on over to trpattern‘s channel on YouTube and take a look at his amazing pattern design tranformation and reconstruction videos. Shingo’s techniques formed the inspiration for my rainbow dress.

I had been watching the […]

a quick present

We found out yesterday that one of our favourite teachers at the girls’ school is leaving at the end of this term (tomorrow!). Both our girls have had her, and had a great time in her class. She’s a very dynamic teacher, who creates a fun and interesting learning experience.

As parents, we found her […]
