Stitch name etymology

I do not mean to be offensive or controversial in this post. My intention is to inform about the etymology of a stitch name. This post was written in response to an email I received this morning about the stitch to which this post refers.

Faggot stitch is a drawn thread stitch in which groups […]

What are you afraid of?

I was having a conversation with a friend on Facebook yesterday about fabrics. She said that some people are scared of stitching on linen. This is something I have never heard of before. I am not sure why someone might be afraid of stitching on linen. Perhaps it is regarded as too expensive to make […]

Embroiderers Guild NSW exhibition

On Friday I went to the opening of the exhibition of the NSW Embroiderers Guild. It was an excellent exhibition, with an extremely wide range of embroideries on display.

The exhibition was opened by Claudia Chan Shaw, author of “Collectomania” and previous presenter on ABC’s “Collectors” TV show. Claudia was an excellent choice for speaker […]

Embroidery calendar coming soon

Since about May, I’ve been working on a calendar with Carolyn Pearce and others from the Embroiderers’ Guild NSW. It features images of beautiful embroidery from the NSW guild collection.

The calendar will be launched next Friday at the opening of this year’s guild exhibition. Calendars will be on sale at the exhibition (which […]

happiest with what count of fabric?

Following on from my last blog post, I’m interested in what count of fabric you feel most comfortable with. The count of the fabric refers to how many threads there are over a particular distance. 25 count fabric means that there are 25 threads per inch, across the warp and weft of the fabric. […]

Tiny, tiny, tiny embroidery

When I was in Adelaide, I visited the Silk Legacy exhibition, featuring beautiful Chinese embroidery by Margaret Lee, and embroidery worked in the Chinese style under the tutelage of Margaret Lee. There were also a number of antique pieces from guild collections around Australia.

One of the pieces I was particularly struck by (there were […]

The ideal scissors for cutwork, revisited

Yesterday I found myself wanting to reread my post about the ideal scissors for cutwork. It was great to read it again and remind myself of all the things I look for in a good pair of scissors for working cutwork embroidery such as Hardanger, Portuguese Whitework, merezhka, Schwalm etc.

I found that the […]

Eastern Silk

Last Tuesday in Adelaide, I had two goals. One was to set up for the Beating Around the Bush market day the next day, and the other was to do it with enough time to spare so as to be able to visit Eastern Silk.

I had heard of the shop, and I knew people […]

quiet and busy

I’m sorry I’ve been neglecting you. There’s been a lot of sickness here, so I’ve been stuck at home looking after sick people (including myself!) and we’re still getting through that. I’ve been stitching away, and also preparing for Beating Around the Bush needlework conference.

I’ll be at Beating Around the Bush for the Wednesday […]

Profile and review on Into Craft blog

Into Craft blog featured a profile of me and my new book “Sardinian Knotted Embroidery” last week. You can read it here. At the time of writing this, there was also a very lovely comment at the bottom of the article, from a happy customer. (I’m not expecting that her comment will disappear, rather that […]
