I’ve hit a conundrum with my jacket. I think I’ve decided how I want the fastenings to look (mostly). But I’ve still got to figure out how to make it work.
I’m thinking of a group of three rouleau loops and self-cover buttons at the top of the lap, repeated at the waist. (Yes, that not-yet-covered self-cover button is plastic. 🙁 The metal ones that were available to me were not dry-cleanable, and as this jacket may need dry-cleaning, I don’t want the buttons rusting!) The self cover buttons will be in the main jacket fabric. The rouleau loops are in a plain red to match the jacket red.
To hold the rest in place, I’m thinking of buttoning the other way (from the inside) on the other lap. My question is whether to place these buttons in a line down the centre (seeing no-one is going to see them)
…or over at the side edge of the inside lap.
I think the buttons down the centre will help me to position everything perfectly (matching the patterns), but I’m not sure if they’ll sit funny there.
Is there anyone out there who would like to advise me on what they think will work better? How would you do it if this was your jacket?
Hey dear,
Popped in after ages. The jacket is So you!
Thanks Megan! How’s things? Sounds like you are wonderfully busy. 🙂
Yvette, this is just gorgeous! Although I have done a lot of sewing, I am no where near as good a seamstress as you, and would probably not attempt something like this for fear of messing it up badly. But I will offer my thoughts on the matter anyway. I think I would put the reverse buttons up the side just to prevent any gaping that might occur. I think it would be easier to fasten that way too. Personally, I would probably use snaps so there would be less bulk, but only if they could be attached without showing on the outside. But, I am assuming that you would be using a flat button for the reverse buttons, so bulk would not really be a problem. Whatever you do, I’m sure it will be fantastic! Hope to see some great pictures when it is finished.
Cindy
Thanks Cindy. Yes, flat buttons only, though a friend has today suggested hooks and eyes instead. As these could be sewn on easily as a test, I may try that first, and if they don’t work, then do buttons and buttonholes. Thanks very much for your thoughts and suggestions. I do appreciate it. (And to dispel any myths, I was extremely daunted by the fabric pattern-matching of this project too!)
I’d go with hook and eye fastenings too, no bulk, very movable and easy to get in and out of.
While buttons might be ok, I feel that the jacket might feel like a “straight jacket” if it is buttoned down on the inside.
Great fabric by the way!
