Mountmellick everywhere!

Mountmellick Embroidery: Inspired by NatureCan someone please let me in on the secret? Why is it that pretty much all the books I am selling at the moment and nearly all the supplies are for Mountmellick embroidery? (I’m not complaining!) Did someone decide to make 2013 the year of Mountmellick embroidery, but forgot to tell me?

From all around the world, orders are coming in for copies of Mountmellick Embroidery: Inspired by Nature, and people are continually ringing to order Mountmellick supplies. Is there some new fad of which I am unaware?

Are you working on Mountmellick embroidery at the moment? Are you doing it by yourself or as part of a group? What made you decide to try it now?

Please tell me, because I am so intrigued!

    Dear Yvette,
I think I have a good explanation of that. I’m suppose to sell your books in France. They are distributed by Search Press in the UK. And since December or even before, I can’t remember when, your book is out of stock. It is very annoying for us. I was selling well your book on craft fairs. I’m looking forward to having them again.
I think that can explain why you are the only source of the book in Europe at least, I don’t know for the US.
Do you know why Search Press don’t have your book for so long time?
I waited several month to have your Portuguese book. I made a first order and it came out of stock immediately for few month.

Hi Anne, thanks for that! I am pretty sure there are some on the boat on the way to them at the moment, so hopefully they will be back in stock soon. However, armed with that knowledge, I will follow up with my good friends at Search Press. Thanks!

I am from the Mountmellick where this work (they call it Mountmellick Work) comes from. I am not a sewer myself but there are plenty of people in Mountmellick who have revived the tradition and it is alive and well here with classes and displays. If further information is required I can see if I can help.

Hi Mairéad, thanks for your message. Yes, I am well acquainted with Mountmellick (the town and the work), and enjoyed my time I spent there. The book that I wrote on the subject is the bestseller at the museum in Mountmellick, so I know that Mountmellick embroidery is very popular. However, it just seems to be even more popular recently! My question was really just a light-hearted question, wondering what has increased the popularity.

A few years back the Country Women’s Association here in Australia had Irish crafts as their focus for the year. It meant that quite a few of them chose to study Mountmellick embroidery as part of that. Perhaps there are other guilds or groups around the world that have chosen to make Mountmellick a special focus of study for this year? Perhaps a random collection of people from places all around the world have just decided Mountmellick is something they’d like to try this year?

I don’t know. Just wondering! I doubt the ladies in Mountmellick have any idea either. 🙂 It’s just interesting, and rather nice!
