wonderful success

Two wonderful successes to report today. Firstly, the Australian Fistula Fund has now finished tallying the monies received and issuing receipts for the Walk For Women, raising money for The Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital. The total raised was over $AU86000! Wowee!

Just to clarify, this was the combined total of all participants, not my tally! My sponsors raised an amazing $AU2895 in my name – a far cry from the $1000 I had set as my goal!

Thank you to all who sponsored me in the walk, and know that you have contributed to this fantastic total which will allow many many lives to be changed for the better. I am astounded at the generosity of so many, and their willingness to contribute to this wonderful, worthy cause. Thank you so much!

beam

Rainbow Girl on the beam, with one of her coaches watching on in the background

On Saturday, Rainbow Girl and her team mates competed in their very first gymnastics competition. We knew it was going to be a very large competition and so prepared her for the idea that they should all just have fun and do their best. They were all terribly excited, and we just wanted them to enjoy the event.

Well, enjoy it they did! And we enjoyed watching them too, cheering them on, and marvelling at their poise and skills. They seemed to be doing quite well – when we took notice of their scores, they seemed pretty good.

And so, on to the presentation ceremony. Rainbow Girl achieved 1st place in Vault, 2nd place in beam, 2nd place in bars, and 6th place in Floor! This astonishing result was then topped off by the award of 1st place overall in her division of the competition. We were stunned and shocked – we had no idea that’s what she was capable of! All her team mates received a placing in at least one event, and most of them received multiple placings.

To say we’re proud of them all would be a complete understatement! Congratulations Rainbow Girl and all your team mates!

Congratulations, Rainbow Girl. What a magnificent achievement. I hope you are as proud of yourself as everyone else if and most of all, I hope you really, really enjoyed taking part.

Thanks Carol – I will pass on your message to her. 🙂 She absolutely loves doing gymnastics and she had a complete ball at the competition. She didn’t “come down” off her high for hours! She’s been begging us to do another day of training, so she’s just gone from 2 days (4 hours per week) to 3 days (6 hours per week).

If she didn’t want to do it anymore, then we would walk away at the end of the (paid for in advance) term. However, she has Olympic rings in her eyes; she’s got drive, ability, perseverance, and opportunity. We’ll just have to watch the story unfold… Just because she wants to get there, doesn’t mean she will, but she’s certainly intending to try her darndest!

I watched her at training today, and she just doesn’t stop cartwheeling, doing the splits and doing handstands. We only have a very small house, so there’s not really room, but if our house was larger, I think she’d spend a lot of her time upsidedown!
