White Threads

what do you like to make?

I’m thinking about new projects for my Portuguese whitework book, and I’m thinking about project applications. We probably all have our walls full of embroidery by now (and its expensive getting things framed), so what are some other items that you like to make when decorated with embroidery? I’m thinking

  • cushions
  • pillows
  • bags
  • runners
  • mats
  • hanging ornaments
  • scissor cases
  • clothing
  • framed pieces…

What do you like to make? What do you like to have decorated with embroidery? Do you like my suggestions above, and do you have some suggestions of your own?

Also, for those interested in the left-handed embroidery scissors, they’re now available for purchase from Vetty Creations. Still waiting on the other products to arrive.

When I eventually get around to doing some white work, I would love to make some tablelinen; a table cloth and/or napkins. I would love to make some bed linen especially pillows.

Apart from a few needle point cushion covers, what I actually make is stuff to frame and yes, it can get very expensive!

I’m hoping your readers will come up with some really good alternatives for finishing embroidery 🙂

Thanks Carol-Anne. There’s a tablecloth underway, but I hadn’t thought of napkins! Excellent – thank you!

The tablecloth sounds particularly tempting Yvette as I love large projects! I will be on the look out for it.

Greetings! I’ve followed this blog for a while but this is the first time I am “chiming in.”

Last year I finished ten projects, and only one was framed. I made a tote bag, a glasses case, the Floral Glove needlecase, a tea tray, two pillowcases, a brooch, a notebook cover, and a mantis shrimp paperweight for my son. You can see them all here: http://boringdrmom.blogspot.com/2011/01/2010-embroidery-finishes.html

Right now I am working on a pillowcase and a heart patchwork pillow from Kelly Fletcher’s Stitch And Thimble issue (that is where I got the tote, notebook cover, and glasses case ideas although I changed some things on those designs). Things I’d love to do: a silk padded jacket; a business card case; I second the napkins–I have a set of eight napkins I intend to monogram for my oldest daughter (someday). I suppose she ought to get a tablecloth too, then. 🙂

Love your work and your blog, and thanks for the introduction to Mountmellick embroidery–someday I will try something Mountmellick for my mom, who is half Irish.

Thanks Carol! Lots of ideas there. You sound extremely prolific in your output of needlework, and now I’m off to visit your blog. 🙂 Thanks for “chiming in”!

Hello Yvette, I am most definitely interested in napery, ie tablecloth, table runner, place mats/napkins. Most of the walls are covered with framed pieces, been there, done that!! I am also interested in coffee table pieces. Good luck with the forthcoming projects and perhaps I can place my order here and now………..LOL……

Thanks for your suggestions and enthusiasm, Linda! You’ll have to be patient a bit longer yet.

You sure you can’t make it down to Brisbane this weekend? 😉

I am interested in clothing. As I am into costuming, I like to make it into collar, sleeves and laces which are detachable to clothing. Or something that can be used to decorate a hat or bonnet. A lacy regency bag will be nice.

well, I have so many things already started (as Yvette knows too well LOL!!), so I’m all for small items related to stitching. Needlebooks, pincushions etc. And ornaments too of course!

    cheers

I tend to avoid anything that will need framing, unless I really can’t avoid it… Clothes, cushions, runners, tablecloths and napkins, anything else I can think of!
