The other day I received an email from fellow needlework designer, Jennifer Forest, and author asking if I knew of any Australian or New Zealander model stitchers. Unfortunately I don’t.
I know that in the US, there are GhostStitchers, who seem very organised and highly professional. However, with us being here in Australia, sending stuff to the US adds time and cost to our postage.
Are you an Australian or New Zealand model stitcher? Or have you been wondering about doing such a thing? Is anyone looking for a hobby/business opportunity? Let me tell you, there IS a need for this sort of service here in Australia if your work is of very high standard. It is an opportunity just waiting for you to start a model stitching business here in Australia or New Zealand.
If this piques your interest, and you think you might be the right person to start, develop and run this sort of service, please do your research and get started! I’ll be looking forward to hearing from you!
White Threads is the blog of Yvette Stanton, the author, designer, publisher behind Vetty Creations' quality needlework books and embroidery products.

This is probably a dumb question, but what exactly is a model stitcher? I’m thinking you mean someone who stitches the samples from someone’s pattern, for a book or pattern leaflet or shop – is that right?
Not a dumb question, Michelle! But, yes, you are right – that’s what a model stitcher does. 🙂
I’ve been tempted a few times to put my hand up for model stitching, however my preference is predominantly cross stitch with a smatter of specialty stitches (but all counted thread), and there just isn’t a glut of AU/NZ XS designers that need models stitching. Of course I’ve just paid membership to the NSW Guild, so perhaps once I start attending it may fuel the fire to expand my horizons once again 🙂
Yes, that’s true – many Australian and NZ designers are not primarily cross stitch designers. But you never know what exciting things might catch your attention and imagination at the guild! I hope that you enjoy your membership.
Thanks Yvette. PS Love your ornament in today’s new Gift of Stitching mag 🙂
Thanks Michelle! I think the whole magazine is quite lovely!
Thanks for your lovely Christmas design Yvette..
Never mind, there are lots of Santas around…..I have a few to get done anyway. They just call my name always.
Loved your fringing utube presentation..very interesting and so clear.

Thanks Barb!
I would so love to do model stitching as I am at home with MS and have bags of time to embroider but I live in the UK and I can’t seem to find out anything about it in the UK.
More hunting needed I think:-)
Yvette, I have just seen this. I didn’t know this type of occupation was sought after here in Australia. I think I may be able to do something like this, as my time is very much my own. You may care to visit my blog and view things I do. I would appreciate a return email if you feel I am up to a level needed for this type of work. I can sort out most stitching techniques. Thank you for bringing this up.
Thanks for the response Yvette – I have a bunch of correspondence classes from the USA Guild that are much too pretty and wonderful to sit on the bookshelves, so I’m hoping meeting with like-minded stitchers it will give me the impetus to get back into learning new techniques once again. I have so much waiting in the wings that are calling to me … Schwalmwork, Ukrainian whitework, Hardanger, Crewel … it brings joy just thinking about the prospects without even picking up a needle 🙂
