White Threads Floss Tube 95 – one of my first embroideries

One of the very first embroideries that I ever did was of wattle, Australia’s national floral emblem. In this video, I show you the embroidery that I did in my first year of high school, and explain the stitches I used, including turkey work which makes a lovely plush pile. I also explain some of the things I would do differently, if I were doing it now.

I also give an update of my website, and let you know about two new products I have for sale – new (to my website) sizes of broder cotton. Broder cotton, or coton a broder, is a lovely soft cotton thread that works up beautifully particularly for satin stitch.

If you are reading this in an email, you can find the video at https://youtu.be/9hV5p1zbLPE

Episode notes:
The wattle embroidery was based on a cross stitch pattern of wattle. It is more than 30 years since I did this embroidery, and while I would love to credit the designer upon whose design my embroidery was based, I no longer have the pattern or have any idea who the designer was. Nonetheless, I am grateful to them for their design.

White Threads FlossTube 94 – a tour of my embroidered needlecases

In this video, I let you know of a vacancy that has opened up in my in-person Frisian Whitework workshop here in Walcha in late November. Following on from the last video, I show some photos that readers and viewers have sent to me of their adapted versions of my designs. I also take you on a tour of seven of my needlecases, with many different styles, embroidery techniques and functionalities.

White Threads FlossTube 93 – Changing a project’s colours

In this video I celebrate the embroideries that PVK sent me photos of: her differently coloured versions of the needlecase and scissor fob from my book “Smøyg: Pattern Darning from Norway”. I invite you to share with me any of my projects that you have made in your own colour scheme.

White Threads FlossTube 92 – Tutorial: How to tea dye linen

In this episode of White Threads FlossTube I have a tutorial on how to tea dye linen. I show two ways to do this – one with even colour across the fabric, and the other with deliberate blotchiness. Tea dyeing can be used to easily colour white linen, and to add an aged look to plain linen.

Errata notice – Frisian Whitework

I have been alerted to a couple more mistakes in my book Frisian Whitework: Dutch Embroidery from Friesland. Previously listed mistakes can be found here.

They are as follows:
Page 39: stitches and techniques listing – Four thread eyelets are listed but are not used in this project. Algerian eyelets are actually used. Their stitch instructions are found on pages 80 and 81.
Page 39: Row 3 – the eyelet in the middle of the star is worked in 945.
Page 39: Row 6 – “Four thread eyelets” should be “Algerian eyelets”. If you have already stitched the project using four thread eyelets, there is no problem with this. It isn’t wrong, it’s just different! They fit in exactly the same positions, and also look beautiful. I definitely would not change them over to Algerian eyelets if you’ve already stitched four thread eyelets!

My sincere apologies for these mistakes. Despite a thorough checking process, unfortunately mistakes do creep through and go to print. I am always incredibly grateful to people who let me know of any mistakes.

New online embroidery course now live!

Well, you’ve been asking for it.

For a very long time.

A very long time.

And I finally have it uploaded and ready to go. Ready for you!

Frisian Whitework Silk Sampler Self-Paced Video Online Course

with Yvette Stanton, author of “Frisian Whitework: Dutch Embroidery from Friesland”

Frisian Whitework silk sampler

My very first online course is now live, and it is on the Frisian Whitework Silk Sampler. The course is a self-paced video online course. There are no set dates for this course as it is self-paced. You can do it all in one week, or you can take the full six months to work through the videos. Sign up when you want, and you’ll have immediate access to the videos. I will send off your supplies pack asap, and when it arrives you can get going!

You can do it in your pyjamas, with your hair a mess, in front of the pile of unfolded washing and no-one will ever know. Or, you can wear your Sunday best, with hair coiffed and makeup pristine, and still no-one will ever know! It can be in the middle of the night. It can be in the middle of the day. Just work through at your own pace at a time that is convenient to you.

Included are 6 months access to the course which consists of 24 instructional videos (4 hours’ worth), a supplies pack of pre-dyed 28 count linen, Gumnut Yarns Buds silk threads, needles, hard copy notes (stitch instructions and project instructions) and a hard copy chart.

Access to me is available within the course, by posting any questions you have in the “Discuss” section. And if you’re a bit stuck, you can even upload photos of your work there, for me to check.

I have run this course already with a select few students and they loved it. Here’s what Libby said: “The class well exceeded my expectations – I have had one experience of an online class previously and appreciated the effort at the time, but your class has polish, in particular the tutor intuition re learners needs sewn into the video resources. The outstanding technical skills to produce such well prepared clear videos in well paced presentations is key.”

If you’re interested, take yourself off to the course page and read through all the information there. Sign up and get going as soon as your supplies pack arrives! If you have any questions, please ask!

I have plans for future courses as well, but as you can imagine, online courses take a bit of work to set up! I’ll add more as time progresses.

White Threads FlossTube 90 – tutorial: how to work an eyelet cluster

Today’s video from White Threads FlossTube is a tutorial from my upcoming online self-paced video course. The course is on the Frisian Whitework Silk Sampler, and the video tutorial shows how to work a square eyelet cluster.

If you are reading this in an email, the video can be found at https://youtu.be/OGd3s-4LM8o

I also need to let you know about an error in “Frisian Whitework: Dutch Embroidery from Friesland”.
On Page 39:
Stitches and techniques: “four thread eyelet” should be “Algerian eyelet – page p90-91”.
Row 6: instead of four thread eyelets, work Algerian eyelets. If you’ve already worked them as four thread eyelets, it isn’t wrong, just different! I certainly wouldn’t undo them and redo them as Algerian eyelets.

White Threads FlossTube 89 – Tips for working with Gumnut Yarns Buds silk

Today on White Threads FlossTube I have a number of updates for you. I ran a class in Smøyg here in town on the weekend, and I show you the fabulous results of my students. I provide an update on my now-no-longer upcoming Frisian Whitework Silk Sampler class in August and how it means I now will be running an online pilot class instead, with a view to opening up this as an online class in the future.

The Frisian Whitework Sampler project from Frisian Whitework: Dutch Embroidery from Friesland has had a supplies pack available for a while. Now you can just buy a precut of the fabric for that project. For the Silk Sampler project you can now purchase the full supplies pack or just the silk threads. And I’m wondering if any of you would like to buy the supplies pack with the fabric already pre-tea-tyed. Let me know if this interests you!

website revampMy website shop has had a makeover because we are visual people, so now instead of a boring list of words on the front page of my shop, it is now found in full glorious colour with a picture of Every. Single. Product. Much easier to browse for what you need/want/like!

And FINALLY, I give some tips on working with gorgeous Gumnut Yarns Buds silk thread.

White Threads Floss Tube 88 – Hardanger needlecase and an online event?

Many years ago I designed a Hardanger needlecase for a class. I’ve enjoyed using it ever since, and it remains one of my most popular patterns. Today I show it to you.

I also discuss the idea of an online event in lieu of (or in addition to!) the Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this idea.
