Hand embroidery patterns at the Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair

In just under a week I’ll be exhibiting at the Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair. As part of my range of embroidery supplies, I’ll have a selection of whitework and non-whitework patterns.
Hand embroidery patterns

They are mostly counted embroidery such as Hardanger, blackwork, and some cross stitch. However there is also a cushion pattern which is a stitch sampler, and there is some Portuguese whitework as well. Each pattern comes with full step-by-step instructions.

If you have any questions about these patterns, please don’t hesitate to ask.

So come and see me for all your whitework and hand embroidery needs at the Vetty Creations stand at the Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair. Stand H10, 29th June-3rd July, Sydney Showground, Homebush.

Hand Embroidery Needles at the Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair

In a week and a half I’ll be exhibiting at the Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair. As part of my range of supplies for whitework embroidery, I’ll have a wide selection of needles that are perfect for working whitework.

The needles I supply are chosen based on what I find helpful for making my whitework projects. There are tapestry needles from size 28 through to 20, embroidery needles in sizes 9 and 5-10, straw/milliners needles in size 4, chenille needles in sizes 24 and 22, and darner needles sizes 1-5 and 14-18.

Tapestry needles are good for any sort of counted work because they won’t split the fabric threads when you’re searching for the right hole. Embroidery needles are good all-purpose needles that I find useful for finishing items, and just general sewing. Straw or milliners needles are great for bullions as they have a long shaft and a narrow eye. Chenille needles are great for Mountmellick embroidery, smøyg and anything where you need to get a thick thread through fabric. Darner needles are great for bullions with a thick thread. All these needles have other uses, but they’re the main things *I* use them for.

I have a few different brands. I like DMC needles because I find them to be good quality needles at a good price point. Not all the needles I want come in DMC brand, so I also stock some John James needles and some Richard Hemmings needles.

If you have any questions about these needles, or would like advice on needles for your project, please don’t hesitate to ask.

So come and see me for all your whitework embroidery needs at the Vetty Creations stand at the Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair. Stand H10, 29th June-3rd July, Sydney Showground, Homebush.

All my books at the Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair

I’ll be exhibiting at the Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair in just a few weeks’ time. I’ll have a large range of products with me – everything* you need for whitework embroidery! (*Maybe not quite everything, but pretty close!)

Hand embroidery books by Yvette StantonI’ll have all 10 of my books available at the show, and I’d love to autograph your copy for you.

Elegant Hardanger Embroidery
Mountmellick Embroidery: Inspired by Nature
Ukrainian Drawn Thread Embroidery: Merezhka Poltavska
Portuguese Whitework: Bullion Embroidery from Guimarães
The Left-Handed Embroiderer’s Companion
The Right-Handed Embroiderer’s Companion
Sardinian Knotted Embroidery: Whitework from Teulada
Early-Style Hardanger
Smøyg: Pattern Darning from Norway
Frisian Whitework

Sometimes people ask me, “what’s the best one for a beginner?” Well, that really depends! If you don’t want to count threads, then one of my stitch dictionaries will give you so many stitch options to play around and experiment with, or Mountmellick is a non-counted embroidery. If you like counting threads (maybe you’ve done some counted cross stitch and want to try something new) then I’d suggest “Frisian Whitework” or “Early-Style Hardanger”.

ALL of my books are written with beginners in mind. But equally, there is so much in each book that there will be something new even for people who have been stitching for years.

They all have step-by-step instructions with clear diagrams. Apart from “The Left-Handed Embroiderer’s Companion” and “The Right-Handed Embroiderer’s Companion” which are my stitch dictionaries, all my books have a range of projects to try. And there’s historical information on the embroidery style. Many of my books have both left- and right-handed stitch instructions.

My stitch dictionaries are regarded by many as the best stitch dictionaries around. They love the clear instructions, the huge range of stitches, and the bright and colourful inspiration photos.

This is what Karen said about them, “I have recommended your books to everyone that starts the journey of handwork. These are by far the BEST books out there & I bought them all when I first started stitching. Once I bought your book I never needed to refer to any of my other stitch books. I bought 2, one for home & one for travel bag.”Hand embroidery books by Yvette Stanton

So come and see me for all your whitework embroidery book and stitch dictionary needs at the Vetty Creations stand at the Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair. Stand H10, 29th June-3rd July, Sydney Showground, Homebush.

If you have any questions about these books, please just ask!

Whitework fabrics at the Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair

I’ll be exhibiting at the Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair in just a few weeks’ time. I’ll have a large range of products with me – everything* you need for whitework embroidery! (*Maybe not quite everything, but pretty close!)

Today I’d like to show you some of the whitework fabrics that I will have with me. From bottom left to top right: Sotema 450 linen (60 count), Zweigart Newcastle linen (40 count), Sotema 20L linen (38 count), Zweigart Edinburgh linen (36 count), Weddigen 160 linen (34 count), Zweigart Cashel linen (28 count), Cotton satin jean, heavy weight.
whitework fabrics
Not shown are Weddigen 22 (50 count), and Cotton satin jean, medium weight.

These are gorgeous fabrics, specifically chosen for their beautiful qualities on which to embroider whitework. Some are just right for counted embroidery, and others are perfect for surface embroidery. Cotton satin jean is used for Mountmellick embroidery and anything else where a good solid base fabric is required. Sotema 450 linen and Weddigen 22 linen are beautiful for monograms and very fine counted embroidery. And all the others are also suitable for counted whitework such as Hardanger, Schwalm, Frisian whitework, Portuguese Whitework, merezhka, drawn thread work, pulled thread work, Sardinian knotted embroidery and many more…

We will have these in fat quarter and fat eighth precuts. The actual sizes of these vary depending on the width of the original fabrics.

So come and see me for all your whitework fabric needs at the Vetty Creations stand at the Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair. Stand H10, 29th June-3rd July, Sydney Showground, Homebush.

If you have any questions about these fabrics, maybe for a project you have in mind, please just ask!

White Threads Floss Tube 107

I had a Frisian Whitework class here on the weekend. I realised that some people don’t know one of the tricks that happens with some thread spools, so in this video, I show you that. I also give you a small preview of some new Sotema linen I’ll have for sale at the upcoming Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair. There’s also a little teaser mention of a possible future in-person Hardanger class.

Upcoming workshops – May and July

I have two upcoming workshops – a one day one, and a two day one – both in my local region.

Frisian Whitework Tree of Life Workshop

Frisian Whitework Tree of Life Workshop with Yvette Stanton

28-29th May, 2022
Walcha Handmade, Walcha NSW Australia

Frisian whitework, which comes from Friesland in the Netherlands, is counted embroidery, where the placement of the stitches is determined by counting the fabric’s threads. This panel, which could be used as a cushion front, features a large tree of life and two initials of your choice. The stitching is done on 36 count linen, with linen thread.

All skill levels are welcome!

Hand Embroidered Pendant workshop

Hand Embroidered Pendant Workshop with Yvette Stanton

9th July, 2022
Wintery Weekend of Wondrous Workshops, Uralla NSW Australia
(this is the next town north of Walcha)

In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to work an embroidered pendant. The stitching is done in variegated cotton thread on 28 count linen, with small seed beads as highlights. A range of colour ways will be available to choose from, including the ones shown in the photograph. Depending on how quickly students stitch, they may be able to take home a finished pendant – ready to wear! – at the end of the day.

Instruction will be given on each of the stitches, and on mounting the embroidery into the pendant tray.

All skill levels are welcome!

White Threads FlossTube 106 – Completed embroidered masquerade mask

I’ve completed my embroidered masquerade mask and worn it to my daughter’s 21st party. I was so happy with how it turned out, and so happy that it did actually work! In the video I explain the process of putting the embroidery onto the mask.

The embroidery is whitework in the Dresden lace style, on bisso linen (54 count), using white coton a broder (no 30) and white Londonderry linen thread (100/3).

White Threads FlossTube 105 – embroidered mask update

In this episode of White Threads FlossTube, I give you a little glimpse into my trip to Melbourne with my daughter for the Formula 1 Grand Prix (and some of the other things we did, including the Chanel exhibition!) and I give an update on my embroidered mask. Previously it was all still in my head, so this time you get to see it in actuality!
