Jardin de Fleurs samplers restocked

Some years ago, I was asked to teach an embroidery stitch sampler class. I didn’t want to design your stock-standard sampler, so this is what I created: the Jardin de Fleurs cushions. There are about 30 different stitches on this design, and extensive step-by-step instructions for all of them are included with the pattern.

[…]

Sardinian Knotted Embroidery square mat

In a very similar vein to my recent post about my Portuguese Whitework sampler (square mat, always catches eyes!), today I thought you might enjoy the Square Mat from my book Sardinian Knotted Embroidery.

Sardinian knotted embroidery is known as Punt ’e Nù, and comes from the town of Teulada in Sardinia. (That’s Sardinia, […]

From the archives – Hardanger with a sheer overlay

A long time ago I played around with Hardanger using an organza or chiffon overlay. This is a bag I made using the technique. I have always loved how it turned out.

When you’re stitching through a sheer overlay on evenweave fabric, let’s just say it’s *difficult*. It’s really slow, because when you just […]

Introducing the Hardanger Filling Stitches Sampler

Because my forthcoming book, Hardanger Filling Stitches, is basically an exhaustive stitch dictionary, there is only one project in it. However, as there’s only one, I had to make it a good one!

The Hardanger Filling Stitches sampler is a band sampler featuring as many Hardanger filling stitches as I could fit onto it! […]

White Threads FlossTube 106 – Completed embroidered masquerade mask

I’ve completed my embroidered masquerade mask and worn it to my daughter’s 21st party. I was so happy with how it turned out, and so happy that it did actually work! In the video I explain the process of putting the embroidery onto the mask.

The embroidery is whitework in the Dresden lace style, on […]

Sharing photos of needlework you’ve stitched

Continuing on from my previous posts about Pinterest and copyright, you may have been thinking, “Well, what if I take a photo of the embroidery I’ve just completed, and it wasn’t my design? Is that ok?”

I’m not a lawyer. My advice therefore is as someone who wants to respect others and give credit where […]

hoops, scissors and peacock feathers

I had a couple of deliveries this week. It’s always fun to get parcels!

The Dovo Hardanger scissors (which I sold the last of at the Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair) are now back in stock.

And finally, I again have all sizes of the Klass and Gessmann wooden hoops with stands back in […]

Overcoming creative blocks

Following on from yesterday’s post about creative problem solving, sometimes the creative process stalls a bit. What do you do when you’re working on making/designing something, and you get a bit stuck? You don’t know what to do next, or you don’t know how to move past the point you’re at.

If I’m stuck on […]

Creative problem solving

When I was doing my degree in Visual Communication at university, in first year, we did a subject called “Creative Problem Solving”. Being the young, green, immature designer that I was, I thought it was such a useless subject. I don’t know that I got a great deal out of it. Maybe the course content […]

What I use to make my charts

A question that more and more people are asking me is “What do you use to create your charts?” So I think it’s time that I explain what I use to make my Hardanger (and other forms of embroidery) charts, and while I’m there may as well explain the other programs I use in my […]
