Wrestling with wrapped bars

Ok, for all those family and friends who are reading this blog to follow our travels, I’ll warn you now that this is a needlework post, not a travel post! When I speak of wrestling with wrapped bars, I mean the needlework kind not the chocolate or candy kind, so you can stop imagining me […]

new embroidery gift cards

Yesterday I took delivery of my new gift cards, featuring images of embroidery from my new book The Left-Handed Embroiderer’s Companion. They are gorgeously bright and colourful – like the book really! The images are details of (L-R) breton stitch, double feather stitch, square and double chain stitch, and spiral trellis stitch.

They are available […]

Enjoying stitches, colour, thread and fabric

I really really enjoyed making The Left-Handed Embroiderer’s Companion. I loved learning new stitches and playing with them to see what variations I could come up with. I loved pushing them further than I would naturally normally do. Amongst my favourites would have to be Spanish knotted feather stitch, up and down buttonhole stitch and […]

Why write a left-handed stitch dictionary?

Let me tell you a little of the background of my latest book The Left-Handed Embroiderer’s Companion.

I am left-handed. I have always been left-handed. I hate using scissors because I am left-handed, and the left-handed scissors that my mother bought me as a child unfortunately disappeared into the ether at some point. I have […]

the latest on the left-handed book

Well… since writing the post on what’s going to be in the left-handed embroidery book, things have changed…

Kirsten Edwards of The Gift of Stitching has suggested a whole heap of specialty counted thread stitches for me to include. And I posted on The Gift of Stitching forums asking for people’s top 5 specialty sampler […]

Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair

Today I went to the Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair with my friend Kirsten Edwards who is the editor of The Gift Of Stitching online magazine, and my elder daughter, who we normally refer to in blogland as The Bookworm.

You’re not supposed to take photos inside the venue due to copyright issues, so we […]

plaited braid stitch

A lot of people end up at this blog because of their interest in Elizabethan embroidery. They come here to see my Elizabethan embroidery from earlier this year.

For all those who are interested, The Embroiderer’s Story currently has a series of posts about plaited braid stitch and how to do it. Very interesting information!

[…]

What’s going to be in the left-handed embroidery book?

A few people have asked what’s going to be in my left-handed embroidery book, so now that things are a bit more finalised, I think its time to spill the beans.

I’m still not sure about the title, but “The Left-Handed Embroiderer’s Companion” is my current top choice. The idea is that this is […]

stitch instructions and diagrams done!

I’ve just finished all the stitch instructions and diagrams, one day ahead of my deadline. WOOHOO!!

Just did a spell check and word count. Its over 35000 words. I don’t think I’ve ever written that much before… Its certainly more than my previous books. And yet, so much of it is pictures.

I must […]

manipulating the needle and thread

In response to yesterday’s question about bullion stitches and how other people hold their needle and thread, Mary Corbet of NeedleNThread, included this as part of her response:

It’s funny – when I first learned how to do bullions (and almost any embroidery stitch, for that matter), I always went by the book. But once […]
