White Threads

Colourfastness

Last week I sent an email off to Pam at Cottage Garden Threads to ask if she would be at the Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair this week. Her reply came back to say that no, she wouldn’t be there, but that Catharina’s Country Crafts would have her stranded threads (not the perles) there for […]

red thread

Following on from yesterday’s discussion of my favourite threads, I’d like to have a bit of a whinge. For me, the holy grail of thread is a good red. Whenever I see a new (new to me) range of threads, I look to see their reds. Quite often, they are very lacking.

While the range […]

your favourite thread

I was thinking this morning about what my favourite thread is. Much of the time I think this depends a lot on the purpose for which you want it. Different types of threads are suitable for different projects.

For me, perle thread is probably my all time favourite thread. That’s because it has a nice […]

mixed fibres: linen and wool

Ok, this is going to seem like a really weird post to some (maybe all!) but just indulge me, please.

There is one question I have for God, when I get to heaven: How is it that light can move as both particles and waves?

Until last night, I thought there was another one, […]

designing covers

I am going to be an *awful* tease today. On Friday afternoon I designed a highly possible cover for my new Portuguese whitework book. I need the cover for publicity purposes for the Sydney Craft and Quilt Show in a few weeks time. But its too early to show you here, as I don’t even […]

arthritis and embroidery hoops

Yesterday I had an enquiry about the wonderful embroidery hoops with stands that I sell:

I wanted to ask whether the 8 inch is the one you find best to use. I looked up White threads again, and saw that you said you can order in other sizes. I have inflammatory arthritis in a number […]

thread sample

Recently I was contacted by a thread company whose threads I had heard of but never seen, but had been wanting to try. They told me a bit about their threads, invited me to join their designers program (no thanks – I am not in the business of promoting specific brands of threads on the […]

weekend whitework

I had the most marvellous weekend. On Saturday we had good friends from Ethiopia (though they are Australian actually) over for lunch and served them a yummy Vietnamese dish, which we figured they’d appreciate because Asian style food can be hard to concoct in Ethiopia. I don’t know that fish sauce makes it to Addis […]

no turmeric dyeing

You’ll be pleased to know that I didn’t get any turmeric or berbere (bright red spice mix with paprika and chilli type colouring) on my tablecloth yesterday. In fact I didn’t get any embroidery on it either!

I did some planning for the surface embroidery – worked out the beginnings of a chart for it […]

drawn thread work

Yesterday I spent the day trying to finish stitching the drawn thread work base for my Portuguese whitework tablecloth for the book. I really hoped I’d get that part done, but time got away. Maybe I’ll get it done today.

And while that will feel like an achievement of sorts, then I have to embark […]
