Ukrainian shirts in Kiev

Yesterday Facebook told me that I hadn’t posted anything to my Vetty Creations Facebook page in a whole FIVE DAYS. Quelle horreur! So I remedied that by posting the following gorgeous photo.

Dove’s eye stitch – clockwise or anticlockwise?

When working dove’s eye filling stitch in Hardanger, you can work it either clockwise or anticlockwise. Both are acceptable, and both work. However, for consistency, you should always stick with the same method throughout a piece.

Do you stitch your dove’s eyes clockwise (right), or anticlockwise (left)? As an addition to this question, are you […]

Why do you love whitework?

Inspirations Magazine called me “the queen of white thread” in a Facebook post the other day, which was very nice of them!

I love whitework for many reasons. Why do you love whitework?

Please note, if you receive this as an email, if you simply reply to the email, *I* will see your response. […]

Fabric angle responses

Thanks to all those who responded to my question about fabric angle for needleweaving. Some replied by commenting on the post, others emailed and others posted on Facebook. It seems that A is the most common, which didn’t surprise me. Next was B, which I did find surprising, because I wondered if I was the […]

Angle of fabric for needleweaving

For those of you who do needleweaving in Hardanger or other forms of needlework, how do you tend to hold your fabric and insert your needle? Do you tend towards A, B or C, or something else? What feels most comfortable to you?

Thanks!

How did you celebrate World Embroidery Day?

Yesterday I wore my new Hardanger embroidery shirt/blouse with pride to celebrate World Embroidery Day! As far as I know, no-one particularly noticed it, but that’s ok because I really enjoyed wearing it. It was really nice to think, “I made this, and I think it is beautiful!”

The pattern for this shirt will be […]

Happy World Embroidery Day!

Today is World Embroidery Day!

The initiative for World Embroidery Day came from Skåne Sy-d, a local group of Broderiakademin, the Swedish Embroiderer’s Guild. The first World Embroidery Day took place in Vismarlöv, 30th July 2011. They feel that the importance of embroidery must be made known so that World Embroidery Day will spread around […]

Why I choose not to use oxicleaners on linens

As you will have read in my report yesterday on The Big Mountmellick Boil Up, by boiling my antique Mountmellick piece white, I found that not all of the stains were removed. And so, of course, all the suggestions came (variations depending on where the commenter lives): “Have you tried using Napisan?” “Would you consider […]

Mountmellick: The Big Boil Up

This morning I finally got the chance to do The Big Boil Up. By the time I got to it, the embroidery had been soaking in cold water for about 36 hours.

On this photo, note the heavy black lines underneath the stamens of the lily. They have to go! You can also see various […]

video demonstrations?

Firstly, thank you to everyone who either commented on the blog or emailed feedback regarding my questions about the type of needlework instructions that you’d prefer. It was really interesting and useful to hear all the points of view, and why people preferred what they preferred.

Today’s question is about video demonstrations. This is something […]
