Ok, having some confusion here… Can anyone tell me the difference between ceylon stitch and ladder stitch? I’ve been doing both and the ONLY difference I can see is the beginning – the set up.
IS there any other difference that I have been missing?

I can’t see a difference and I think this is a case of a stitch being known as one thing in one area and by another name in different area –
Hmm, that’s a very good point, Sharon. The different ways of starting could just be that different people have different preferences for how to start.
Like how some people start buttonhole with a chain stitch, and others don’t.
Hi, Yvette –
They begin differently, true. Also, ceylon stitch is also worked several columns across, as a filling, whereas ladder stitch is generally only worked in one long (ladder-like) column. I think you’ll find in some books that they display ceylon stitch as a number of columns (worked horizontally, but the finished product is several columns across, as a filling). I’ve only ever seen ladder stitch illustrated as one long ladder….
So perhaps that’s the difference?
It’s something to consider, anyway! 🙂

Hi Mary,
Yes, that’s also a very good point – about ceylon stitch often having more than just the two plaited looking columns.
Oh, I am so enjoying all these stitches!
