Had a bit of a scare last night. My husband and I had just finished watching a Miss Marple DVD and very soon after that, there was a noise (I can’t remember how it sounded) and the screen went black and the computer wouldn’t work.
I didn’t panic. I didn’t scream. I DID think of all the work I’ve done over the last week or so since it was last backed up.
I remained calm.
I went to bed, trusting that when I restarted the computer in the morning, when it had cooled down, all would be well. I did have a little panic in bed – my breathing got all out of control, so I just prayed and God got me back to rights!
So, this morning sort of all was well.
The laptop battery seems to be stuffed as I can’t start the computer when it is in. But without the battery it starts. (Otherwise I wouldn’t be writing this!)
So that’s all you get from me today, as I am off to back up all my recent files. And you know what the moral of the story is: BACK UP YOUR WORK REGULARLY! 🙂 Oh, and probably you shouldn’t blame Miss Marple.
Edit 10 minutes later: Book now backed up. 🙂

Yikes! Glad to hear you’ve backed up now. I don’t back up as often as I should, either, but I am putting a plan into action pronto!
It got much worse yesterday and I am none the wiser why. By the end of the day it was taking about 20 minutes to boot the computer (I could have happily done it much quicker than that with my shoe encased foot, but that doesn’t tend to preserve the longevity of a computer…!) and forever to even just open a desktop folder. Fortunately, accessing the internet on another device I was able to follow the advice of some guy called Ashik on some forum somewhere, and now its all very happy again. I was thinking the whole thing was dying a horrible death.
I use MyOtherDrive – up to 100Gig storage for $5/month on-line storage. I have no particular reason to recommend this company over others – it’s the one I picked, and everything has been fine in the last 9 months or so since I started using it.
And it’s so nice to go on-line and see all my docs safely stored there. You can set it to keep deleted ones as well, just in case of an ‘unfortunate button choice’. It runs on a schedule as often as you like, and takes a remarkably short amount of time to to the backup in the background, tho the initial backup takes a few days. You can store more for a bit more $.
I really recommend on-line backup!
Thanks for the recommendation!
Oh, PS – One nice feature of MyOtherDrive (and other on-line storage programmes??) is that you can “share” selected folders with other people. Just send them an ‘invite’ and tell the programme which folders the invitee can access to read and/or upload. A LOT easier than sending files through a yahoo (which usually seems to fail for me), a large file sender, or distributing a hard copy.
That would be an interesting way to get the files to the company that prints my books. Thanks!
