I live in the surface/freestyle embroidery world. For me, four embroidery designers come immediately to mind.

    1. Diana Lampe

I discovered some of her books in the early 1990s when I was visiting Sydney. I was getting bored with American commercial kits and there really wasn’t anything in the US book stores besides cross stitch (this is pre-Web). I wandered into a bookstore in Sydney and found many, many surface embroidery books, but Diana’s books really caught my eye. They showed me some possibilities with embroidery that I hadn’t seen before.

    2. Jane Nicholas

Beautiful designs and precision embroidery. Jane is another embroiderer who opened my eyes to possibilities. I had never seen nor heard of stumpwork before I saw her first book.

    3. Trish Burr

I am very grateful for Trish’s designs. I’ve learned so much about choosing colours for shading. She’s the master at picking colours! I’ve also been able to polish my thread painting skills by stitching several of her designs.

    4. Helen M. Stevens

I love her design aesthetic. I appreciate her for introducing me to Piper’s Silks which has led me on to other silks.

I also want to thank you, Yvette, for your incredibly useful lefty stitch book. You made it so I don’t have to ‘think’ as much when it comes to working decorative stitches. My brain is very grateful, especially as I get older! I find that I’m rather tired of reversing right handed stitch diagrams.

Thank you for sharing four of your influences, Margaret! They are each amazing embroiderers. I’m so glad that you find my book helpful. Thank you for letting me know.
