Yesterday’s post about red thread brought an amazingly long and detailed reply from Suzy. If you haven’t read it, go and check it out! Suzy knows a lot about red thread!
She talked a lot about Cottage Garden Threads, probably because I mentioned the other day that I think I need to know more about them. So I had a little look on the web, and came up with the Cottage Garden Threads blog and website. They had a wonderful post with really nicely photographed skeins of their threads, which helped me to see the colours Suzy had talked about.
And so I was thinking, “I wonder where I can get my hands on some of these threads?” and then it occurred to me that next week (yes, that’s right, *next week*) I’ll be at the Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair, and maybe, just maybe, I might find them there! What an opportunity! I hope I find some. 🙂
White Threads is the blog of Yvette Stanton, the author, designer, publisher behind Vetty Creations' quality needlework books and embroidery products.

If you get the idea that I adore red threads, you’re right! (And blue, but that’s another story.) Yvette, I would imagine that the Cottage Garden people would be at the Fair. I first came across them at the same fair in Melbourne and have been addicted to their threads ever since. It’s a company owned and run by terrific women and it was one of them who told me about the colourfast testing.
On the subject of colourfast (or not) thread, I have just read this terrific tip in the latest Threadlines, the monthly publication of the Victorian Enmb Guild. Rosemary Tonkin recommends a new product called Colour Catcher, little sheets that you add to the wash. They catch any loose dye that runs into the water so it doesn’t end up on your embroidery. Rosemary has tried it and it WORKS. She kept rinsing until the water was clear and added a new sheet every rinse. They come in packets of 15 and I have just bought a packet from the laundry section of my local Woolworths. Can’t put my hand on my receipt right now but it wasn’t expensive. So, I’m going to try some Cottage Garden on white when I have a moment and see what happens when I wash it.
I’ll be quiet now.
Warmest regards to all, Suzy B in Melbourne.
P.S. If you can’t find a shop that stocks Cottage Garden Threads, contact them directly.
I just got a reply from my email to Country Garden Threads saying that she won’t be there, but that someone else will have them at the fair.
Great tip on the Colour Catchers – never heard of them, so I’ll have to check out the supermarket!
PS, i like blue too.
