Vicarious Valentino

I mentioned previously that I’d love to go and see the Valentino exhibition that is currently on in Brisbane. I was hoping to see it when up there teaching. The teaching has been put off until next year, and the exhibition will be long gone by then. 🙁

However, my husband has been in Brisbane this week for a conference. He is staying very close to the gallery where the exhibition is being held. So he went along for me. I asked him to press “record” on his eyes when he got there. I hope he remembered!

Apparently it was wonderful. Exactly the same exhibition we saw in Paris a couple of years ago, but with some added dresses from this year’s collection. Also there was no glass in front of the gowns in Brisbane, unlike in Paris. And importantly, there were visible signs saying “no photography” unlike in Paris, where we missed them and got a little rap over the knuckles. Honestly, we didn’t know we weren’t allowed!

A catalogue has been purchased on my behalf. My husband said that its the size of a brick, so he was pleased to learn that they have sold out, and by ordering one for me, it will be posted and he won’t have to carry it home in his luggage. As he’s also getting one for my sister, he’s even more pleased not to have to lug two home!

So l look forward to drooling over the catalogue in good time. My guess is that it will be put aside until Christmas, which is a longer wait, but its nicer than not seeing it at all!

If you do get the chance to see the exhibition, get there early because the queues are quite long!

Rather a distance to traipse from England, but I am distinctly envious, all the same!

I went to the exhibition about 2 weeks ago just before the school holiday started, very crowded. I joined in the tour and she talked about each dress and the history about it. I enjoyed the exhibition a lot. To go with this exhibition, there are free fashion movies showing every week mainly Friday and the weekend. Check out the gallery of modern art facebook and keep you up to date what is happening.

A friend went to see a collector’s exhibtion a few years ago here in Melbourne (he’s a National Trust architect, with subsequent excellent taste) – he told me all about it, and I’ve been drooling to go to one every since!

Don’t forget to press “record” on your eyes when you are looking at the catalogue for me.

You had a tour, Antonia??!!! Wow, that would have been fabulous! I loved just seeing the gowns (must stop calling them dresses!) but to have the history behind it as well… Did you press “record” on your ears for me?

Recorded: look for the one he made for Cate Blanchett to attend Oscar (ie my favourite). A white gown worn by Nicole Kidman. The wedding dress worn by Jackie Onnasis. A group of red gowns, one of that was worn by Brooke Shield. Look for the one he made for Julie Roberts. Watched one of the video about him instructing the dressmaker to make the dress (by hand) and have the model tried it on. The bistro food are all Italian to fit into the exhibition mood.Fashion movies I am going to are:
Proenza Schouler 2009: Fendi by Karl Lagerfeld 2009, Louis Vuitton 2007 and Valentino: The Last Emperor 2008. There are many more, but I cannot afford the time to go to all.
I did not buy the book, probably all the garments will be mentioned in the book. Please “record” when you get the book.

Thanks – what a handy feature all this “recording” is!
