SAL: still buttonholing

buttonhole edgingI’m still pushing along (or given our recent – still resultless – federal election here in Australia, perhaps the phrase to use would be “moving forward”) with the buttonhole edge around the Mountmellick embroidery cushion.

I hope yours is progressing well too, wherever you are up to in the project. Anyone want to share how you’re going? Have you posted pics on your blog or on a Flickr account, or something similar?

Haven’t taken any pics but still progressing. I have a leaf, most stems and most stamens to do yet. Still enjoying the stitching very much and treasure your hints and helps.

Wow, it sounds like you’re going really well! I bet it is absolutely beautiful stitching too, knowing the standard of your work!

Thanks for the comment but I am still very unhappy with my buttonhole stitch. When I stitch closer together the top part seems to pile up on top of each other. I think the stitches should be cozy but not almost knotted up. Cautious about ripping out yet again. Oh well, maybe on the next stitching they will find themselves laying as they should be – naughty stitches!!!.

    Ok. You’re right-handed?

Are you stitching with the rolled edge at the top or the bottom? Are you working left to right, or right to left?

It *could* be to do with thread twist. Working in the opposite direction (while keeping the rolled edge in the same place) can make a difference to how the stitches sit. It may feel extremely unnatural, but can you try it the other way?

Yes I am right handed. The rolled edge is at the top (my left hand) and I stitch in at the right and out at the left. I will try your suggestion and see what happens. Thanks.

I did work it the opposite direction and WOW!!!! what a difference. The buttonhole stitches are much closer together and the top of the buttonhole is sitting pretty. Thank you so much for your help. I showed my work at our guild meeting last night and all were impressed and had many questions. It was fun. Thanks again and I will definately do another stitch a long again.
