Left-handed embroidery book review

Another review of The Left-Handed Embroiderer’s Companion for you today. This one is from Mary Hickmott’s New Stitches. I received my copy of this a while ago, and just yesterday found it again at the bottom of a pile of books, so now I can share it with you.

From the review in the May 2010 No 205 issue:

Realising the deficit in diagrams explaining stitches for left-handers, Yvette has created this comprehensive stitch dictionary… The range of stitches is astounding with over 170 included in the book… The Left-Handed Embroiderer’s Companion by Yvette Stanton is an excellent reference for embroiderers and invaluable to anyone who teaches embroidery classes.

Check out the magazine for the full review. Thanks to the lovely people at New Stitches for sending me the copy of the magazine.

    Hi there Yvette,

So glad that the book is a run away success.

I think a query I had, must have got lost in computerland, or I cant find it!

I have the right handed version on my wish list, but wanted to know

…………..Do you cover Fagotting stitch in detail and also the fancier fagot stitches. I am really eager to obtain a book that shows these stitches in stages. All the books I have, just show the stitch, with no instructions!?lol

    Regards,
    Marysia.

    Hi Marysia,

Just reposting the bit you need from a previous comment:
Unfortunately my book does not have faggotting stitches – I just couldn’t fit everything in! Yes, it is cretan stitch, though in Ethiopia they call it “chicken feet”!

The Complete Stitch Encyclopedia by Jan Eaton is a book that I have that has insertion stitches in it. I got mine very cheap, second-hand from Amazon Marketplace, I think. It has a few insertion stitches in it, and explains how to use paper behind the join to keep the fabric edges a set distance apart.

It must be so gratifying to see how much people appreciate all your hard work on the Companion!
