This is my favourite project (and favourite image!) from Portuguese Whitework: Bullion Embroidery from Guimarães. I wanted one really big, really impressive project for the book, and this is it!
I started this cloth when I was in Ethiopia back in 2010, so it has special memories attached to it, of our time in Ethiopia.
If you would like to make one of these tablecloths for yourself, the full instructions can be found in Portuguese Whitework: Bullion Embroidery from Guimarães. Order your copy today!

Beeea-utiful!
What fabric and thread did you end up using… or is that giving too much away?
Thanks Jeanine! The fabric is 38 count linen and the thread is pearl cotton 8 – these are both the traditional materials that would have been used, and are still used!
Wow! Beautiful.Thank you so much for showing this.I’ve added this book of yours to my wish/buy list.
It is a beautiful photo, with the way the sun draws lines through the cutwork. It’s a beautiful technique, too. I don’t think I’d be afraid of bullions any more after stitching one of these projects! LOL. Food for thought.
Monica, I think you are correct – if you stitched one of the projects from the book, you would get lots of practice at stitching bullions, and hopefully all that practice would create confidence. I must say, I’m quite good at bullions now! 🙂
