Are you friends with finishing?

Organza Hardanger Ornament

Following on from my question the other day about projects in my books that you like to make, I’m interested to know about finishing. Most people indicated that the things they like to make are small things like needlecases, bookmarks, scissor fobs, biscornus and Christmas decorations (all of which I […]

Hardanger projects from “Early-Style Hardanger” by Yvette Stanton

A question I ask from time to time, because I like to be meeting the needs of my audience, is what sorts of projects do you like to make? I like to include a range of things to make in my books, with some large […]

A different kind of whitework

Nearly 30 years ago I did a degree in Design (Visual Communication). It was absolutely formative in bringing me to where I am today.

Probably because of some feedback from one of my uni assignments, I came to believe that I wasn’t very good at pushing my designs. I think I understood that I […]

Frixion pens – I wouldn’t touch them!

I saw this posted on Facebook today. It is apparently from Pilot Pen UK marketing, regarding Frixion pens and needlework. I have tried to find the source of this image, but cannot. I therefore cannot guarantee it is legitimate, but it certainly highlights some real concerns for me.

I have always been extremely wary […]

Hardanger Filling Stitches sampler supplies packs

There is one project in “Hardanger Filling Stitches”: a sampler which uses many of the stitches in the book. It is worked on 28 count linen banding, with linen threads, and a few small beads. The finished sampler measures approximately 28 x 59cm/11 x 23in for the stitching area.

I have put together supplies […]

Magazine articles and projects

Yesterday I mentioned a project of mine that can be found in an old magazine. Over the years I have had many projects and articles featured in various embroidery magazines. Not so much recently, because I’ve been more focused on writing my books and teaching embroidery. However, there’s a lot of content out there that […]

From the archives – Hardanger with a sheer overlay

A long time ago I played around with Hardanger using an organza or chiffon overlay. This is a bag I made using the technique. I have always loved how it turned out.

When you’re stitching through a sheer overlay on evenweave fabric, let’s just say it’s *difficult*. It’s really slow, because when you just […]

New pendant kits!

I’m heading to Sydney today for the QuiltNSW Exhibition marketplace. Setup is on tomorrow (Thursday) and then exhibition runs from Friday to Sunday.

I didn’t know whether I would have these ready in time, but I can now say that I will have new pendant kits available at the show! The kit is called […]

Glimpses of the Hardanger Filling Stitch sampler

There is only one project in my forthcoming book, “Hardanger Filling Stitches”. That’s because it is primarily a stitch dictionary. However, I wanted to give you at least one project on which to try out most of the stitches, and so, there is a large sampler.

If you haven’t already, you can pre-order your copy […]
