Brisbane Portuguese whitework class

Portuguese whitework embroidery class projectAll systems are go for my Brisbane Portuguese whitework class in February. I’ll be teaching the project shown right, at AllThreads Embroidery on the weekend of February 26 and 27. (My flights are booked!) There are still spaces in the class if you would like to join us.

I’m really excited about teaching this style of embroidery. It is just simply so gorgeous – and that’s not of my doing, its just a gorgeous style!

Please contact AllThreads Embroidery for details and to book.

If you’re a Brisbanian (what do you call yourselves?), I’ll be arriving about midday on Friday, so I’ll have an afternoon to fill. I would have gone to the art galleries but they’re still closed after the devastating floods. Can anyone suggest anything typically Brisbane or non-typically-Brisbane-but-still-interesting that I can occupy myself with that afternoon?

Non-brisbanian suggestion: if its really hot – a train to the suburb of Sandgate on the beach is nice, lovely old bungalows, cool breezes, a path all the way around the bay/beach. Redcliff beach is also pretty nice on a hot day.

That sounds rather nice! Would it still be ok post floods?

I was going to suggest finding any riverside cafe that has managed to get up and running again to support them, sit and do some embroidery and write postcards to your friends!!

I think Sandgate and Redcliffe were okay (not like the city), not 100% sure but I think a lot of their flooding worries depend on the high tides.

    Yes, that makes sense.

It’s a delightful, textural piece you’ve chosen to illustrate the post – the techniques look fascinating!

You may find that GOMA will have reopened by the time you arrive Yvette. Businesses are returning to ‘normal’ rather quickly. Sandgate would be a good option. If you want to sit and ‘play ladies’ while overlooking the river I can heartily recommend Joseph Alexander’s high tea. You can sit inside in air-conditioned comfort and watch life go by on the river. They were high and dry during the floods. http://www.josephalexanders.com/History.html

You will find some interesting galleries and museums at the University of Queensland. The link to the art museum is below but if you go to the main site, it will direct you to the others. It would be a very pleasant afternoon.
