I got an email yesterday from my printers to let me know that my advance copies of The Right-Handed Embroiderer’s Companion are currently being couriered to me. Wow! This is earlier than I expected!
Before a books shipment is delivered in full, the printer normally sends a couple of “advance copies”, so called because they come in advance of the rest of the shipment. I have never really figured out the point, because if you were to take a look at it and say “oh no, I don’t like that…” its a little late really, isn’t it, seeing the whole print run has already been done? I suppose if there were something DREADFUL, the whole thing could still be pulped, but I don’t suppose that happens very often, as surely there are usually enough checks for most things to be noticed before that point.
I am rather excited, because there is the slight possibility that they will arrive on Tuesday (Monday is a public holiday for us – celebrating the Queen’s Birthday, though as it often falls on my birthday, I prefer to think of it as celebrating my own birthday…!), which means that I MAY have them to look at at The Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair, starting on Wednesday! Even if it doesn’t come on Tuesday, chances are it will on Wednesday, so that means I am even more likely to have them for showing off from Thursday onwards.
Oh, so exciting!
So, if you’re in town, you may be able to come and take a look and place your order at the advance copies at Stand G32 (Vetty Creations and The Gift of Stitching) at the Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair, at Darling Harbour. The show is on from Wednesday 16th to Sunday 20th at the Sydney Exhibition Centre, Halls 1-3.
Even if you won’t be there to take a look, you can see a turn-the-page preview, and pre-order your copy of The Right-Handed Embroiderer’s Companion now.
I have been saying that they will ship in August, but there is every chance it may be at the end of July, depending on how long they have to sit on a dock when they get here. So there’s not much longer to wait!
Hi there Yvette,
Congratulations on the early release of your book.
Having gone through the publishing process with my husbands book, I know that you are so lucky to have such quick publishers……………..Chris only got 1 “advanced copy” and people thought that he would have a huge stash of his own.lol. As you know postage to our neck of the woods isn’t that fast!!
May I ask, does your book have faggotting stitches; I am so desperate to get hold of a book that has the basic stitch and its variations. All the books I have dont actually show me properly how to do it. Am I correct that the other name used for these stitches is Cretan? Just would like to know before I order. I am sure you will have covered these insertion stitches.
Many thanks again for your lovely daily blog.
Kindest regards,
M.
Hi Marysia,
As the publisher myself, I’m fortunate to have excellent printers. They always do a fabulous job, including picking up errors that I haven’t noticed. They’re great, and I love working with them. Also, because I am the publisher, I can specify how many advance copies I want, though usually I just go with two. The bulk shipment comes a few weeks later, and then I have to find places to put it all…!
Unfortunately my book does not have faggotting stitches – I just couldn’t fit everything in! Yes, it is cretan stitch, though in Ethiopia they call it “chicken feet”!
The Complete Stitch Encyclopedia by Jan Eaton is a book that I have that has insertion stitches in it. I got mine very cheap, second-hand from Amazon Marketplace, I think. It has a few insertion stitches in it, and explains how to use paper behind the join to keep the fabric edges a set distance apart.
How exciting for you Yvette. I’ve got my fingers crossed the advance copies arrive for you on Tuesday.
