These are two techniques used to help create beautiful stitches when more than one strand of thread is in the needle. I used a laying tool for projects with multiple strands in my book \u201cSm\u00f8yg: Pattern Darning from Norway\u201d and also for the Whitework Sampler in \u201cFrisian Whitework: Dutch Embroidery from Friesland\u201d. It can also be very useful for working cross stitch.
