White Threads FlossTube #46 – Portuguese Whitework runner

In today’s video I talk about and show you the Portuguese whitework runner from my book, “Portuguese Whitework: Bullion Embroidery from Guimarães”. I also discuss my dilemma for my next book – I can’t travel to do any research!

If you are reading this in an email, you can find the video at https://youtu.be/juixF83y5QA

White Threads FlossTube #39 – Flick-through previews of Yvette’s books

I realise that many of you buy my books online or order them from your favourite needlework store, having never really seen what’s inside them, unless you’ve seen a friend’s copy. That’s quite a leap of faith! Today I’m going to give you a flick-through preview of all my books, so that you can see […]

The elephant in the room

In all this talk of respect for others’ work and not breaching copyright, there is an elephant in the room. Maybe you’ve noticed it. Maybe you haven’t. I certainly have.

You may have been thinking, and I have certainly heard this in my mind from silent accusers: “Yvette, isn’t your work derivative? Don’t you base […]

Sharing photos of needlework you’ve stitched

Continuing on from my previous posts about Pinterest and copyright, you may have been thinking, “Well, what if I take a photo of the embroidery I’ve just completed, and it wasn’t my design? Is that ok?”

I’m not a lawyer. My advice therefore is as someone who wants to respect others and give credit where […]

It isn’t ok

Recently I saw a photo of an embroidery that someone had done, and rightly, they were very proud of it. It was beautifully worked.

They said that they had found the design on Pinterest, and they didn’t know who the designer was.

This made me incredibly sad, and sat extremely uncomfortably for me.

There is […]

White Threads FlossTube #31 – plaited braid stitch

In 2008, as I was recovering from serious illness, I worked an Elizabethan project with lots of plaited braid stitch on it. I learnt so much about the stitch from doing this, and was able to write comprehensive step-by-step instructions for my stitch dictionaries because of it. In this episode of White Threads FlossTube, I […]

White Threads FlossTube #26 – Researching my current book

In this White Threads FlossTube video, Yvette presents a talk she gave at a conference dinner early in 2019 at The Auckland Great Escape. It is about the research for the book she is currently working on, though obviously when she originally presented the talk she was at an earlier stage in the book process. […]

I’m still alive!

After moving last year to a rural town (Walcha, NSW), renovating a house, and settling in to a new lifestyle, I have been much remiss about keeping this blog up to date.

We are loving life in Walcha, and are getting to know people, and adjusting to what life is like here. Many people have […]

recording historical stitch methods

Following on from yesterday’s post about the right way to make stitches, if there are so many *right* ways to make the one stitch, how do I decide which methods to include in my books?

Studying old smøyg collars at a museum in Norway

I generally choose the method that was the most […]
