finished brooch

Yes, it turned out to be a brooch – the colourful little embroidery I have been working on over the past few days worked its way into a brooch. This is mostly because I have been really pushed for time this week, with very little extra brain space for idea generation…
I used a couple of [...]

Colourful gift

Yesterday I showed you the beginnings of a gift for a friend. At the time I wasn’t very happy with it, and suspected that I would end up taking out most of the stitching.

And I did!
This is the new version of the embroidery. I finished the red wiggly chain stitching. I can live with it! [...]

gift for a friend

This weekend we’ll be celebrating a good friend’s 50th birthday. (Carina, if you are reading this, stop now!) I would like to make her a gift because she’s special!

She likes bright colours. My first thought was “Oh dear, I don’t do bright coloured embroidery.” I was envisioning garish brightly coloured Hardanger! But then I realised, [...]

SAL: things for finishing

If you’re doing the cushion, you’ll need a couple of extra bits to make it up. Firstly, you’ll need access to a sewing machine, unless you’re hard core and don’t mind doing it by hand(!). White machine sewing thread will be helpful.

You will also need a cushion insert to stuff the cushion with. You can [...]

Stitch+Stitch=Magic

I found out yesterday that my embroidery for the Stitch+Stitch=Magic exhibition has been accepted! I really enjoyed working the piece, so I am pleased that it has been accepted.

My exhibit is called “Coloured Contours” and is an exploration of colour, stitch and texture. It uses my technique of working on hand-dyed wool felt, and using [...]

Hardanger needlecase

Recently I received a lovely email from Marjolein in the Netherlands. Marjolein was wanting to share some pictures with me, of a hardanger needlecase that she has made, featuring one of the projects from my book Elegant Hardanger Embroidery.

starting the next book

I have been just itching to get started on my next book, and have been procrastinating with all sorts of other worthy things for long enough! So I made it my aim to finally get going the other night.

I transferred the folder where I had been collecting things for the book, over to my new [...]

SAL: deciding on stitches

Just to recap, so far in the Mountmellick stitch along we have covered tracing the pattern, and getting inspiration for embroidering lily flowers. I suspect that yesterday’s post did not come through in the RSS feed (probably due to my little mistake last week!), so if you didn’t see it, my apologies, and please make [...]

SAL: tracing the pattern

Welcome to the Mountmellick embroidery stitch along! Even if you have decided not to stitch along with us, I’m glad that you’re following along. I welcome all questions. Just because I understand my reasoning for doing certain things doesn’t mean that you do! So please ask questions and make comments.

The first thing we need to [...]

Going in a exhibition

I’ve decided to enter an embroidery in an exhibition. The Embroiderers’ Guild of NSW, of which I am a member, is having an exhibition called “Stitch + Stitch = Magic” in September. Its focus is contemporary, innovative embroidery and design.

The entry forms have to be in by tomorrow, Friday, so I posted mine off yesterday. [...]
