Associazione Culturale Is Sinnus, Teulada

Before I visited Teulada to research for my book “Sardinian Knotted Embroidery: Whitework from Teulada”, I arranged to meet up with members of their town’s cultural association, Associazione Culturale Is Sinnus, Teulada, while I was there. Prior to our visit, I had email contact with two men in the group, who organised my meetings with […]

Beating Around the Bush 2014, Adelaide Australia

Well, the big news of the day is that the brochure for the 2014 Beating Around the Bush needlework conference in Adelaide has been released to those who had signed up for information via the Country Bumpkin website. I can’t find a direct link for the brochure on the Country Bumpkin website, but you could […]

Hungarian embroidery

The Reader has a trumpet exam coming up and last week had a rehearsal with her accompanist whom we had not previously met. My husband took her to the rehearsal while I did some work.

They came home and said, “You should have gone!” The accompanist is Hungarian and apparently had embroidery all over the […]

Ballarat Autumn Leaves Seminar

Today I am in Ballarat in Victoria for the Ballarat branch of the Victorian Embroiderer’s Guild’s “Autumn Leaves Seminar”. I’ll be teaching Mountmellick embroidery. There are other tutors also here teaching their areas of specialty.

As I’ve never been to this gathering before, I’ve no idea how big it is, or what to expect, so […]

Crochet doily

This doily from my great aunt’s collection is a beautiful crocheted doily. I love all the picots! Having done some crochet some years ago, I’m pretty amazed that someone would persist with that many picots! The doily measures about 22cm (8.5 inches) in diameter.

That’s all I have to say about this one, but it […]

needlelace doily

The second of the doilies from my great aunt is this needlelace doily. It is in excellent condition, so much so that I wonder if it is not actually very old. It measures 14cm (5.5 inches) in diameter, so it isn’t very large. The thread is quite thick, so the appearance it quite heavy, rather […]

Filet lace doily

Some time back I told you of the day we spent with my great aunt going through her things in an effort to help her downsize. She was very happy for us to take anything that we wanted, as she’d rather things go to family who will treasure them, than just be dumped.

I got […]

Researching old embroidery styles

As you will know from reading my recent post about having itchy feet, I’m wanting to learn a new-to-me style of historical embroidery for the purposes of writing a new book. So how do I decide which one to pursue?

For me, the process often starts with going to my local embroiderers’ guild and trawling […]
