SAL: filling the petals with spots

Today we are heading back to our very first flower, in this Mountmellick embroidery stitch along. My intention was always to put some filling in these petals. If we remember the photos of the lilies that I had right near the beginning of the stitch along, you may have noticed that lilies often have some […]

Cable plait stitch and plaited braid stitch

What’s the difference between cable plait stitch and plaited braid stitch?

cable plait stitch

This is cable plait stitch. It is the stitch used in Mountmellick embroidery. It is a reasonably simple stitch, with only a few steps. Also known as figure of eight stitch to the ladies of Mountmellick, because that’s what each […]

SAL: the upper pair of leaves

Now we move on to the uppermost pair of leaves, just below the lily flower bud.

I have ummed and aahed about how to work these leaves. I really want to use a filling that fills without having an edging. All our other shapes so far have an edging around them, so I really would […]

SAL: leaves finished

Here are the finished leaves – the set between the opening lily and the open lily. I have not yet decided whether I will add anything to them. I wonder about a centre vein, or adding a row of perhaps small French knots inside the outline of the leaves. I will leave that decision until […]

SAL: fixing the leaf

I mentioned in my last Mountmellick embroidery stitch along post that I wasn’t entirely happy with the way the stitches sat on the lower left side of the leaf. I wondered if I’d be happy leaving it like that. Of course the answer is “of course not!”

When I drew lines on the picture so […]

more left-handed stitch dictionary reviews

As I regularly do, I was visiting Amazon yesterday to have a look to see if anyone had written new reviews of The Left-Handed Embroiderer’s Companion. Umm… yes… they had. Many of them…!

As a left-hander myself, I was very interested to see if this book would improve the constant struggle with learning and implementing […]

SAL: next pair of leaves

Back to the Mountmellick embroidery stitch along today, where we are moving on to the pair of leaves above the main lily flower.

Straight away my mind said “it needs to be satin stitch”. This is the classic way to work a leaf like this, with the wide outline worked in satin stitch. I would […]

my favourite stitches

Because I have set you the challenge of thinking about your favourite stitches, I have been considering what mine are. Its not so terribly easy, is it?!

So the easiest thing for me to do was to look through my left and right-handed stitch dictionaries. So here’s my list:

up and down buttonhole stitch (p28) […]

special stitches

It seems that from our Mountmellick embroidery stitch along, some people have discovered the beauty of cable plait stitch for the first time. Its been a favourite of mine for some time because it is so very pretty.

cable plait stitch

I discovered all sorts of weird and wonderful stitches while researching and putting […]

SAL: centre of opening lily

I have worked the centre of the opening lily in the same way that I did the open lily flower. I used stem stitch for the stamens and style, and bullions for the anthers and stigma. The bullions are again wrapped anticlockwise, making them quite fat and pronounced.

You’ll also notice that the stem to […]
