White Threads

Yesterday and today

Yesterday I did some more work on the Christmas ornament that I am making for The Gift of Stitching‘s Christmas ornament issue. I have used some of Stitches and Spice’s gorgeous single ply silk with counted thread embroidery. When I first saw this silk at the craft show in June, I fell in love with […]

gift for a friend

This weekend we’ll be celebrating a good friend’s 50th birthday. (Carina, if you are reading this, stop now!) I would like to make her a gift because she’s special!

She likes bright colours. My first thought was “Oh dear, I don’t do bright coloured embroidery.” I was envisioning garish brightly coloured Hardanger! But then I […]

SAL: lily bud

Well. I’m still a bit bereft of ideas for how to work the lily bud. Looking at the whole design, I think it needs to be a thin outline (perhaps), with a light filling. This is because the other parts of the design that are nearby have either wide outlines or are completely filled. The […]

Stitch+Stitch=Magic

I found out yesterday that my embroidery for the Stitch+Stitch=Magic exhibition has been accepted! I really enjoyed working the piece, so I am pleased that it has been accepted.

My exhibit is called “Coloured Contours” and is an exploration of colour, stitch and texture. It uses my technique of working on hand-dyed wool felt, […]

Valentino in Brisbane

I’ve just found out that there’s currently a Valentino exhibition on in Brisbane! A few years ago when we were in Paris, there was a fabulous exhibition of Valentino gowns at the Musée des Arts Decoratifs. It was wonderful.

I found a selection of photos from the Brisbane exhibition on the ABC news website. I […]

SAL: new thread in cable plait stitch

Today in the Mountmellick embroidery stitch along we continue learning more about cable plait stitch.

When you are working cable plait stitch, no doubt at some point you will run out of thread before you finish the part that you are needing to stitch. With cable plait stitch looking to be quite a complicated […]

SAL: opening lily flower

Today, after a little break to hopefully help those who need to catch up to do so, we’re back to our Mountmellick embroidery stitch along. We’re moving on to the opening lily flower. I’ve decided to work this one in cable plait stitch.

Cable plait stitch is one of three stitches that are said to […]

starting the next book

I have been just itching to get started on my next book, and have been procrastinating with all sorts of other worthy things for long enough! So I made it my aim to finally get going the other night.

I transferred the folder where I had been collecting things for the book, over to my […]

SAL: the stem

In deciding what stitch to use for the stem, foremost in my mind is the fact that a lily stem is reasonably smooth. Therefore I should use a linear stitch that is reasonably smooth too.

My options could be:

stem stitch coral knot stitch – worked close together, not spaced apart couching chain stitch

So, […]

SAL: coral knot stitch leaf edge

I’m using my new big hoop (because I got it for my birthday and I want to use it!). In working the coral knot stitch, I’m finding it is difficult to insert the needle in a sewing action without some of the fabric threads of the satin weave breaking. To stop this from happening, I […]
